Rise of IT and Rise of India
In this post, I would like to draw some parallels in the positive evolution of tech and the home nation - India. I would like to begin by making a small statement – the Information Technology (IT) enabled Services is India's contribution to the world and the IT services are the driver for the growth in India. Everyone knows that IT is the best domain where Indians are making it out including myself. Every country has a strong point, an area where the fruits of the nation’s labor are seen. For India, it is IT, which is the result of the fruition, friction, traction, and the toil. Every nation brings up something with a view that the something will take care of the nation. That something happened to be IT which has evolved along with the nation. The parallel evolution lies beneath this meeting point of requirements which serves as a propulsion for both to reach greater heights. Let me lay out a few factors which aided for India and IT to merge beautifully.
Parallels in the Growth
India opened up with the economic reforms of 1991 and it is around the same time the Information technology made its small steps towards a bright future. In a way, the growth in IT is a harbinger of growth for India, an indicator that the country is being productive and doing well. It is to be noted that the best decades for India after Independence economically, financially are those overlapped with the booming soft power through software services. India needs an avenue to become better as a nation and the emergence of IT served the very purpose. In a way, the positive growth story of the nation is intertwined with the growth of IT. It has been three decades of parallel growth and needless to say, IT is a huge enabler to the emerging India. As mentioned, the growth of wages, the growth of individuals which is proportional to the growth of the nation is all made possible by a growth of IT. Out of three decades, I am a person directly involved for a decade. I consider myself as a product from India manufactured for its own growth.
Parallels in work mode - emergency
A software organization is very different to the traditional organizations in terms of speed and time taken for a product turnaround from conception to delivery. An IT product making revenue as a finished good can be produced in no time and enhanced over incremental iterations. It is completely different to any other commodity in terms of speed and agility. Software employees working like soldiers bring this inherent emergency to the table. Never earlier has there been a rush in the lifestyle of India as there is in the last few decades. When the nation is powered by many of these fast-paced individuals, things happen over-night and progress is achieved in no time – just what the doctor has ordered for the country. It is nothing but the emergency of a worker filling the requirement of a nation.
Parallels in the historic necessity
India has been under foreign influence for over one thousand years. The nation has been in a slumber and never realized its potential for this entire duration. The rise of this nation from a sleeping giant to a roaring lion is a historic necessity for every Indian and Non-Indian. It somehow needs a direction to meet the objective. The urgent necessity of the rise of India is a good time to meet the requirement for the rise in IT. It serves both the objectives of making India as a dominant nation in IT and a superpower by itself. Some people already seem to have a bad feeling brewing for the nation in general and an employee like me after just a handful of years. This is uncalled for since centuries of low-lying inefficiency lie beneath this recent surge in activity. This rise is a very huge requirement, and the actions are more than justified, given the historic subjugation of India and the necessity to see it as a superpower for itself and for the sake of the world. When the time comes, enablers will come to meet, and IT is one such enabler to fulfill the dual requirement.
Parallels in achieving tangible and intangible outcomes
When a citizen is extremely hardworking and productive, it reflects as part of the tangible outcome of the country. When an Indian in another nation does the same, it may not directly affect the nation but becomes an intangible outcome of the home country. Similarly, those working in the IT domain bring a lot of tangible outcomes in terms of wonderful applications they are building and the outcomes which cannot be directly measured but serves the larger picture as well. For example, when you consider the covid pandemic, this is very true. At a time when everything came to a blockade, IT services went on uninterrupted and people like me worked overtime to create tangible outcomes in the job and serve the nation intangibly. In the last few decades, the bigger picture is always considered – in addition to creating real outcomes to the self, organization; the virtual service to the nation, in terms of catering to indirect stakeholders, is done on a large scale.
Parallels in being the catalyst in the making of nations
When a nation reaches outward and shapes the direction of another nation for the better, it can be termed as a good influence or a good catalyst. India needs to be a good catalyst and spread its wings. Similarly, IT has been a great catalyst at both home and abroad for the past few decades. At home, with a population of over 130 crores, India needs an invigorating catalyst for its overall management and IT has served this cause very well. I have been a live example of this in the last decade – that the nation’s need of a forceful stimulus is met when it is embedded in the IT backdrop. IT services works with many other foreign organizations, nations and honors the opportunity to become a catalyst in their making.
These multi-layered factors are some of the levers behind the status quo. India discovered Information Technology services to the world and Information technology discovered India to the world. There is no denying this fact. When companies all over the world access IT services from India, it is with a hope to transform their technology landscape, provide better services, offerings to their customers, enable them to become a better organization which aids to bolster their native countries. In this way Information Technology has become a medium for India to serve the world. It is no secret that employees like me from India work for many of the foreign organizations, countries for the good of self, parent organization, partner organization, parent nation and the partner nation.
I don’t generalize but it is the case with myself. I work for the betterment of my own self, parent organization, partner organization, parent nation and the foreign nation. I work in such a way that all these entities are positively affected. It comes to the point that the job is most important since it influences these all entities. Me as a person can never do this, but me as an employee in IT can do this to cater to all the parties concerned. This is the power of IT services from India, the requirement for the rise of IT in India, the growth of India through IT and the contribution from India to the world.
When it turns out to be a mutually beneficial transaction for all the parties involved, will there be any customer willing to do business with any organization from India and its employees. India is very much positioned to take on the job and the world needs to do a favor to help and allow the rise of India in all its glory. India is a nation whose median age is very young. Despite the boom in few areas like IT, there are crores left behind. The young nation needs a push from behind, and not the friction, to march ahead. The toil of people like me is to lay a smooth road for travel. Once again, the world needs to play the enabler, the time has come after a prolonged darkness for the Indians to shine and they need to rise to the occasion. The play is on, the drama is on, the stage is set and the Indians just need to enact the role players.
