Review of The Movie of NTR Acting Life - Kathanayakudu

This is a one-off post in the interim. I recently watched a movie NTRKathanayakudu and this is a reflection, review of the larger-than-life personality of the person enacted on the big screen. It has been some time but better now than never. The main motive behind watching the film is to educate myself of the real life of the great actor-turned politician. I want to dissect the reason behind - what it takes to leave an indelible imprint on the lives of many. That said, this is not an effort to promote a group, caste or region in any miniscule manner whatsoever. It transcends across all the boundaries and entire humanity is the biggest beneficiary eventually.

The film starts with NTR working in a job as a registrar. After few weeks, he decides to leave the job as he sees corruption all over the place. Let me pause here for a moment. These are no modern days with full of jobs, alternatives and all the people finding some thing or the other. These are old days with limited opportunities and problems of unemployment in full effect. He is one of the very few to get that job among tens of thousands. A good job in government is a boon in those days and one would do everything to retain it. Not the born-great NTR. To relinquish this position like nothing tells of his caliber and confidence in his abilities to do anything. This episode also speaks of the aversion he has by birth towards corruption. These characteristics come out to the fore in full force when he forms corruption-free political party in the future.

Thus the brave NTR resigns from the job and makes his foray into little known territory of films through his acting skills on stage. He is apparently confident of winning there with his beautiful appearance, personality and due time, necessary people mould him to winning ways. Even with everything under his belt, he is remarkably human in nature. The way he forsake the meal coupons to his room mates and later comes to the aid of the room-mates after becoming a star tells of the gentle and finer qualities inside a more stubborn and harder attitude of a man. The way he earns the respect, support of his wife and endears himself to everyone around sets him apart as someone special. These traits catapulted him to name and fame in no time and he acted in a lot of successful movies. Seeing the series of movies he made on-screen, one can observe doing a hit movie by making audience connect to the movie and getting their applause is by no means easy task. He also had this tenacity to work and hardwork which made him stand 20 hours for portraying Ravana character.

He loved movie, lived movie and made movie his passion by working rigorously. This can also be inferred by his not just sticking to acting but directing and doing other role plays as well. Besides acting in more than 300 films, he also directed 18 films. This speaks of the varied dimensions he brings to the film and theatre. A hugely successful film Dana Veera Sura Karna directed by him is a treat to watch for over 4 hours. This film is shot in 43 days while NTR acted in 3 different roles in the film in addition to doing direction. This is a class apart among the old and contemporary heroes to simultaneously act and direct films. How many of the new age heroes can take up this multiple role plays like direction etc. It takes someone very special and master of all trades to venture across roles.

Another unique feather in his cap is his exact enactment of mythological characters especially Lord Krishna. He acted like Krishna in 17 films and old-timers of his generation worship him like God by seeing him in those characters. There are people who don't have enough food to eat but had his photo as Lord Rama or Krishna worshipping him as such. When you can touch the deprived in a very positive way by being a ray of hope you are really a God. Not just they admired his hero but he also reciprocated by serving them when time arises. NTR moved to people's suffering and he served those in need. When famine struck Rayalaseema and Cyclone hit Coastal Andhra, he actively participated to serve people by travelling to places and collect funds. This sown the seeds for his future ambitions to serve the people on a larger scale.

NTR as an actor is only story half told and I am almost in awe of his achievements as an actor itself. He is an actor par excellence and laid foundation for the future film industry. Today's films are made by taking him as inspiration and actors tread in his footsteps. On the whole, his presence in history makes a great heritage which every Telugu speaking person can proudly inherit. What he achieved as politician is for generations to tell by establishing Telugu Desam Party. This story will be told in the sequel NTRMahanayakudu. The first part is available to view on Amazon prime.
