Take On My Experience In New Mode - 2
A few months back I tried to recall a few events which happened ever since I became a student again. Here are my further observations which are going into my online diary.
After the initial bright and cheerful days in the new location, things turned out to be normal and I am left to fend myself with the room and classmates. All of us are told at the induction that you need to hit the ground running once the classes begin and relax in the interim. Classes do begin and I hardly understood how to lock myself academically and work hard with 9 hours of classes per week. I clocked 16 hours per day elsewhere during my studies when I was a child. I came to know more about this system after living through for a couple of months. I learned as much as I can from the lectures which are all sincere and backed by a history of reputation and greatness. You tend to listen to the theory in the system which is practical and without pretention or imitation. All the concepts are tried and tested by the same men or their ancestors of the land before being taught. It always makes sense to learn about the little drops of technology while sailing in the ocean of technology-mad nation.
A couple of months into the first semester, classes and assignments ate a bit of my entire free time. For a few days, I also visited a food store to help with billing. I also helped with cleaning the store and filling the stock which is a hard days job. For all the academic hard work put into listening classes, assignments and writing a multiple choice mid-exam, there is a break of 7 days in the mid of the semester. When I wondered what the break is for, many of my friends went seeing places. I learnt it is the time to enjoy before the 'rigorous' schedule starts all over again.
Classes resumed after the break and the lectures began to peak with the time. It felt analogous to watching a hit movie for 2 and a half hours with a ten minute break. The only difference is knowledge substitutes entertainment. Though I am not sure if I grow as a person after attending the classes, they certainly brought out the hidden potential in me. It is a good feeling to do assignments which your neighbours in the class are unable to do. You feel belonged, important and required which is a hallmark of the system - bring out the best in the people.
Your life is intertwined with the people who make it. In this case, it is mainly students who are pursuing masters in a foreign land. This is no easy task since a lot is at stake including their reputation in homeland. A successful person studying masters is the most serious and busiest person who is highly motivated and puts self before anything. No relation is important to him other than that which exudes 'business' - either with same or opposite sex. He simply cannot afford to have a lighter moment. Neighbours become friends for the sake of favours and friends become strangers after the favours. While wading among these persons, I lived through the end of the semester.
The concept of low class hours encourages students to work while studying. People work in part-time jobs to earn income for expenses while studying. There are a set of people who only work literally while studying. Since I did not find any such jobs, I became complacent with attending weekly lectures. Though the course work is less demanding, there are several other avenues which has me occupied like cooking, washing dishes, cleaning house etc. which is something I never relied on myself and taken for granted for the past two and a half decades. This is the problem with places asking for best of people. You don't find people dedicated to menial jobs. By the end I did hit the ground running by walking and working in kitchen which helped me in evaluation and getting good grades.
After the finals, I went to another location for a while. In the entire process of visiting a distant place, the most difficult part is travel. You have to board a plane twice. There are no government buses or trains and a common man needs to climb the steps and board a plane. Even there is no cheap transportation within the city and you need to have a car before stepping out. This journey in flights and cars is inevitable which essentially makes this a country of rich. I gone through all the hardships, became rich and travelled in a plane. Houston is the best place I visited in my life in terms of looks and cleanliness. But after my travel, the new location is more scenic and serene. Such places with scarce population are worth a visit than to stay.
If I was to digress myself from me, the aura of the movie Bahubali need a mention. Though I did not watch (since I was tired of watching 3 movies a week) the movie caught the attention of everyone in its zone. There are maniacs who are hitherto sane people and watched 2 to 3 times in the first 2 days. Its been a long time since a movie spell bind the people by inducing trance, trended heavily not just online but in real and became talking point. I lived my childhood watching Tamil magnum opus movies dubbed in telugu and this is the first time a Telugu movie was dubbed into 4 other languages which is a moment of pride. It was acclaimed and accepted by wider audience which is a new beginning in itself. The credit goes to the graphic designers since there are many graphic shots. But a movie is a movie and not a holy mission for the people to completely sway in its tide.
