Take on the struggle for statehood
The subject has been on the forefront of the happenings constantly for most of the recent past. Since the Telangana state is declared, there are few view points which can be put around the same. These should in any way neither dampen the spirit nor aimed against the struggle of the vast majority but only to be considered as a form of expression.
There has been support from most of the people of the state for and against the formation of a new state. While there is an intense agitation, being almost regular, in the demand for a separate state since few years; there are more in number who opposed without a voice, expressing their dissent at these demands. The new state of 9 districts if carved out will carry present capital Hyderabad along with few issues at which the the remaining 13 districts has stakes lying in. It is presumed the formation of a separate state will preserve the identity, resources, governance, jobs for its people. As for those who are behind this struggle, the sample size represents politicians, lawyers, teachers, employees from PSU's, students, doctors from government affiliated institutions - clearly making it a people's agitation. All the shots called by the political parties, Joint action committee(JAC) were followed to the dot and with the synergies converged any law would have been enacted if not for a state in itself.
The main intention behind the severe agitation must have been to grab the attention of the policy makers, but there are few qualms in the manner is which it is pursued. 1.22 lakh teachers hit the roads closing 10000 schools for a month which directly hit 30 lakh students. Fortunes are not as great as nearly 1000, including many students took their own lives citing the struggle as the reason for extreme decision. All the acts around bred them with ill-rooted dogmas and prejudices. Statues at the centre of the capital city were displaced, governors speech is disrupted, a respected politician is hit surfacing the simmering anger. The report of the committee which did extensive work for an year is disregarded. These events of little significance were fueled by open speeches whose verbatim will only encourage these acts. These may as well continue to sow seeds to get a result which may not be as expected or fruitful. While there ought to be sympathy, understanding from the rest of the people for mutual co-existence, cultivating a feeling of regionalism, sub-ordination, exploitation has been at the core of bitter abhorrence.
There is a lot of difference in the way a naive person freely speaking the morals and a grown up adult living in the midst of full heat of life compromising those at every turn, influencing and directing those around into the same path. The adage - be older in age and stay younger at heart has more relevance. As a young student, we were taught a story in which a child would be given a small stick by his teacher and asks him to break the stick. He does it easily. Then, he would be given a bundle of sticks and he could not break the bundle. The story is still etched in the memory of most of us for the moral it taught - stay united to stay stronger. This same child would be perplexed at the status-quo of the state after hearing those around talking - 'Let us get separated and live like brothers'. All these claims for separation succeeded and are ratified by the Central government as the solution for longstanding problem is reached. With so much happening towards an acceptable solution that may alter the dynamics of the land, the question is Will it be achieved by forming the physical boundaries ? or Can't it be solved otherwise?
