Pastime Musings
After the initial hiccups, the sailing in the training became relatively smooth and may it stay as such till the end. Thanks to the strong dollar, the computing industry has generated lot of wealth and employment. This has ushered in a certain degree of financial independence – which was hitherto enjoyed by a elite few – to those with second tier of brains.
My complains of the peripheral hardships here would have been unmatched with the real struggles had I graduated a decade or two earlier. There is a lyric of a Telugu song sapatu etu ledu..(which translates to ‘we have no work, atleast sing a song brother’) from movie Aakali Rajyam(translates to Hunger Kingdom) of that period which captures the turmoil and disgust, the previous generation has gone through after passing out of student life. Considering the previous state of affairs and with an income which is a high multiple of percapita income of the country, an average techie has every reason to be not only content but also channelize some of his fortune to the vast pool of needy. However, as the adage says ‘Aim high and achieve high’, the second rung brains have first rung ambitions. This sector has a high attrition rate(mostly due to transitions from one company to another for want of better pay) and comprises of a majority sniffing for an opportunity to board a foreign bound flight to work on site or firing a volley of entrance tests for an M.B.A to bag a fat pay. When their ancestors has no biscuit to eat, these guys want golden biscuits and hesitate not to eye for a diamond one. At times, the measure of excellence equals the measure of greed as well.
Software is done and lets move on to movies. A few weeks back, I reluctantly saw ‘3 Idiots’ and well it is a 3 hour thorough entertainer. The absorption, acceptance and practice of mean stuff is fashionable these days that a movie named ‘3 Good Boys’ would not live for 3 days. It is hard to imagine the behaviour of people living in the country devoid of movies. There is a friend of mine and many probably who while away their entire free time(which far surpasses the work time) watching pictures. An opinion can be formed on a society from the kind of entertainment they seek. And the bulk of the entertainment emerges from movie and cricketing fraternities. Unlike the short Hollywood motion pictures, Indian cinema clock around 3 hours and a cricket match for 8 hours, which indicate our acute watching skills and a knack of careful vigilance (otherwise who would have sat and watch a 1000 year foreign rule). A typical Indian watching thirst may not be quenched by a quarter if the observation is only for an hour.
